Melanie Fiona
The Bridge
(SRC; 2009)

One of the better breakout albums from a contemporary R&B star of the 21st century, The Bridge is locked and loaded with R&B grooves with addictive hooks. She isn’t afraid to use flirty danger (“Bang Bang”) during show & tell, but it’s her celestial celebration of Martha Reeves soul (“Please Don’t Go”), blaxplotation grooves (“Ay Yo”) and her Brandy-meets-Aretha vocals that steers the album into comfy waters. Her rapturous ballad, “It Kills Me,” almost sounds like it came out of a Jerry Wexler recording session.
