Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite
(Columbia; 1996)

Of all the acclaimed neo-soul albums, Maxwell ‘s Urban Hang Suite could’ve easily been hailed a masterpiece in the Stevie Wonder generation. With funky Maze-like jams (“The Urban Theme,” “Sumthin Sumthin,” “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)”), a brash of Prince (“Dancewitme”) and slow jam appetizers (“Whenever Wherever Whatever,” “…Til the Cops Come Knockin’”), Maxwell broke out the gate as a R&B messiah.
