New mixtape expands classic grooves, recent radio hits with classic disco 12″ inch treatment.

J Matthew Cobb, the forces behind PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com and the newly-launched magazine HiFi, sat down this week to piece together an exclusive mixtape of extended mixes from disco-funk classics and some more recent tunes called In the Mix; Extended Grooves, Funky Moves: Volume 1.

During the celebratory trimester of HiFi’s grand opening and with the launch of its new YouTube channel (subscribe today), the downloadable mixtape containing extended mixes of popular songs by Jaheim, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Leela James, Fantasia, Con Funk Shun and Steely Dan will be available until the launch date of HiFi Magazine’s web site. The new domain, HiFiMagazine.net, launched earlier this month.

“I always wondered why some of disco’s finest tunes were only limited to its three-minute edited single or album version,” says the longtime editor of PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com. “This collection allows those classics to get the royal treatment if it was properly heard in long-playing 12″ inch forms while also honoring current dance floor favorites with using the same process.”

Jaheim’s “Ain’t Leavin’ Without You” is updated with a stretched-out opening; exposing its juicy sampling of The Whatnauts’ 1981 regional disco classic “Help Is On the Way.” “Good Time,” the familiar Leela James tune, gets a nifty facelift with surprising ad-libs and a verse taken from Gwen McCrae’s “Funky Sensation.” Dance-pop hits like Maroon 5’s “Misery” and Katy Perry’s popular summer hit “California Gurls” provide a sensible balance for the moderately-paced R&B set. Other delightful disco-battered tunes, like Steely Dan’s “Peg,” Con Funk Shun’s “Got to Be Enough” and Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Can’t Let Go,” are updated with longer breaks, funkier instrumental sections and creative loops that gives them an irresistible glow for the dance floor. A Taste of Honey’s “Boogie Oogie Oogie” and Carl Carlton’s highly-sampled “She’s a Bad Mama Jama” are also etched deeply into the mixtape’s funky playlist.
