At the start of the song’s first seven seconds, it seems as if a time machine has teleported one’s body back to 1979 when the vibrations of Sister Sledge’s ‘He’s the Greatest Dancer’ echoed unto the hard floors of Studio 54. Brooklyn-based soulful house trio Tortured Soul easily turns back the hands of times on their latest offering, “Can’t Keep Rhythm from a Dancer.” Carefully winking at Nile Rodgers’s guitar riffs and Chic’s disco funk, the song is sheer evidence that Daft Punk aren’t the only hipsters digging into the “let’s go retro” regimen. John-Christian Urich’s drum pulse and pop-friendly pipes carries the song’s heavy load with grace, while bassist Jordan Scannella stirs up the groovy bass and keyboardist Ethan White lays out euphoric piano (and the occasional synth bleeps) across the background’s terrain. Yes, originality will be argued by nostalgic buffs here. Even the front cover looks like one of those cool generic covers from one of those 12-inch maxi singles, but Urich’s cure for those sleepless, dateless nights drastically calms all of those quibbles: “If you wanna win her heart/That’s where you gotta start.” In this instance, the rhythm is sure to get ‘cha. Here’s a friendly reminder: Three mixes by Miguel Migs of “Can’t Keep Rhythm From a Dancer” will certainly satisfy the ears hooked to soulful house music cravings.
