Who’s Zoomin’ This? Aretha Franklin’s Arista Era Compilation Finally Hits Vinyl
Arista collection from Queen of Soul gets some respect with vinyl reissue
Time to ride the freeway of vinyl love!
Knew You Were Waiting: The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-1998, the 2012 Arista-era compilation that ultimately replaced the outdated 1998 version, is getting revamped for vinyl lovers. Originally sporting sixteen tracks comprised of Re Re’s hit singles for Clive Davis’s Arista label, Legacy’s Knew You Were Waiting will be getting a modest upgrade, hence the newer title (The Best of Aretha Franklin 1980-2014). This version, a trusty 2-LP set, will include “Rolling in the Deep (The Aretha Version),” a track from her last LP with Arista. Those questioning its inclusion may have forgotten its chart performance. It climbed to number 30 on the Adult R&B, number 47 on the R&B/hip-hop charts and even hit number one on the US dance charts (due to a trusty set of remixes).
Copies are now available for pre-order online at multiple retail locations (including Amazon) and will be released on June 18. Turquoise color vinyl will exclusively be sold at Walmart.com.
2021 is proving to be a riveting and colorful year for Aretha Franklin’s rich legacy and catalog. Last month, National Geographic’s Genius aired its third season focusing on the Queen of Soul with Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo playing Franklin. Later this year, a bio-pic that was being spearheaded by Franklin before her unfortunate passing in 2018 is slated to hit theatres and will feature Jennifer Hudson in the starring role. Aretha, a 4-CD box set (also available as a 2-LP highlight set) powered by Rhino, will be released in concert with the aforementioned motion picture. And already this year, several of Aretha’s classic LPs have been given the colored variant treatment, including Young Gifted And Black, which was released on gold vinyl to celebrate Black History Month and Oh My Oh My! Aretha Live in Philly on 2-LP orange and yellow vinyl for Record Store Day.
