James Brown
Live at the Apollo
(King; 1963)

Before Papa got a brand new bag, James Brown’s first claim to fame was when he and his Famous Flames took the Apollo stage in 1962 while touring the chitlin’ circuit. This historic event, one of the first great live recordings in R&B, documents the Godfather in the raw. His soul stirring squalls blaze the ten-minute ballad “Lost Someone,” while “Try Me,” “I’ll Go Crazy” and the erratic “Night Train” show off his skill as a quintessential showman.
