Otis Redding
Otis Blue
(Stax; 1965)

Even on a hefty display of cover tunes, Otis Redding flexes his muscle, pumping more blood into Sam Cooke tracks (“Shake,” “Ole Man Trouble”), sweat into Rolling Stones riffs (“I cant-a-get-me-no,” Redding blurts out on “Satisfaction”) and tears (“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”). This is a first-rate blues album but done in the context of the Stax machine.
