D’Angelo
Voodoo
(Virgin; 2000)

Possessed by hip-hop swagger and the ghost of Marvin Gaye, Voodoo is an all-inclusive groove album. It’s a bit Parliament/Funkadelic (“Playa Playa”), a bit jazz fusion (“The Root”), a bit James Brown (“Chicken Grease”) and rowdily urban (“Left and Right”). At times, the grooves get so funky that it feels as if D’Angelo turned The Roots a loose for a hour long jam session. When he takes on “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” he proudly puts the soul of gospel on display using a Prince-like falsetto as the icing on the cake.
