Jill Scott
Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1
(Hidden Beach Recordings; 2000)

An introductory album in the new century should open with a cool intro, hence the hip-hop cut-and-paste “Jilltro.” As the pages turn inside Scott’s musical bio, a world of neo-soul blossoms with Scott’s java shop poetry (“Getting’ in the Way”), Maxwell swag (“The Way”) and echoes of ecstasy (“He Loves Me”). Besides revealing she’s a graceful singer, she’s not too afraid of taking risks, blending scripture quotes and Mary Jane worship with Faze-O synths on “A Long Walk.”
