Curtis Mayfield
Superfly
(Sussex; 1972)

Superfly was more than a motion picture soundtrack; it’s a collage of ghetto life doused in ‘70’s psychedelic funk and LSD soul. Mayfield supplies his moving falsetto on a string of masterpieces like the startling “Freddie’s Dead,” “Little Child Runnin’ Wild” and the blistering funky title track. “Pusherman” feels like proto-rap, where he spits out the shadowy mysteries of the streets: “I’m your mama/I’m your daddy/I’m that nigga in the alley.” When he kicks out “Give Me Your Love,” he spreads the imagination of Isaac Hayes into the depths of pop culture.
