Holiday Album Roundup 2012
Lady Antebellum
On This Winter’s Night
This isn’t the first time at the North Pole for Lady A. On their second round, the gang emerges from their somber funk reflected in “Need You Now/Run to You” to sing with a swinging upbeat energy, thanks to “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and “This Christmas.” The country pop trio fiddles with traditional jazz-pop arrangements on “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” while intertwined their Nashville-stoked harmonies. All of the six tracks from their 2010 A Merry Little Christmas EP are stacked upon this set, so technically everything isn’t perfect. Even with twelve tracks aboard, the warm title track is still the album’s only original. And for the thousandth time, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is revived. Lady A’s slowed down soulful arrangement isn’t strong enough to replace the original, but still comes with an element of surprise.
