Title cut from Kings of Leon’s forthcoming album is simply a warm tease to the ear
“WALLS” isn’t your typical KOL lead single. It’s relaxed, atmospheric, almost too sedated. There’s no bravado, no vibrant sing-a-long chorus (“when the walls come down” just repeats) and no brilliant climax. A guitar in the distance pulls off the occasional bluesy groans, but the band settles for the comfy folk-rock instrumentation inside the serene production made by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire), which plays well during a hot summer sunset. And inside the lyrics, frontman Caleb Followill sings of a ruptured love affair: “You tore out my heart/You threw it away/A Western girl with Eastern eyes took a wrong turn and found surprise.” It’s not a bad tune, just not something you’d want to compare with “Sex on Fire.”
Their new album WALLS drops in a few days on 10/4.
