Holiday Album Roundup 2012
Richard Marx
Christmas Spirit
The handsomely popular singer-songwriter updates his 2010 holiday EP track listing with a full-length disc full of delicate productions and chiseled love ballads done in Marx’s MOR-pop style. “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” the worshipful a cappella “Alleluia” and the upbeat Phil Spector-styled title cut are still the standouts, but the inclusion of “The Christmas Song” and the nostalgic “Christmas Mornings” keeps the cozy vibes in constant motion. With his warm, youthful voice still in shape, Christmas Spirit is more enraptured by its wisely executed AC arrangements, fluttery strings and subtle acoustic levels. His voice hardly rises beyond a whisper, particularly on the second half. Think of these performances as pop lullabies. Above all, Marx creates a decent adult-friendly holiday album without all the jingle bell rock.
