Rock ‘n soul band pulls off one funky, hot Stax single

stpaulbrokenbones-01With a blaxploitation funky groove, dipped in a dose of Mayer Hawthorne retro swag and Memphis lo-fi soul, “Flow With It (You Got Me Feeling Like” is the type of art that the Birmingham rock ‘n soul band so desperately needed. Unlike the partial uptempo jams of their previous record Half the City, this feels like a righteous made-for-radio single. Along with a tamer, but smooth as silk Paul Janeway on lead vocals, “Flow With It” is full of melody, a simple sing-a-long chorus and enough bad ass funk to put them into the Stax Hall of Fame. Yes, it sounds like a lost Sharon Jones/Dap Kings’ nostalgic-anointed joint, but it doesn’t sound exactly like a rip-off. And for that, we are pretty pleased. May the old school narrative continue on.
