Chaka Khan: Like Sugar
Chaka is back with something for the summer, something funky and something oh-so nostalgic
Dubbed the Queen of Funk, the revered Chaka Khan is back with new music. And it’s been a long time coming. Although she’s been quite active in the studio with collaborations with acts like Incognito, Beverely Knight and B. Slade, Khan hasn’t made a musical splash as a solo act on the charts since 2007’s Funk This. With “Like Sugar,” you can hear the funky diva hitting all her familiar notes on the groovy throwback jam. Using a heavy sampling of Fatback Band’s “(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop,” the Switch-produced track takes a journey through portals of reverb as Khan builds up her appetite: “It’s like sugar/So sweet/Good enough to eat.”
A new album is certainly in the works. Hopefully there are more moments like this on the horizon and ones that feel a little more complete. “Like Sugar” is sweet, so is the cool dance-centric concept video, but it feels like a cheat when compared with her tour de force funk anthems.
