Mackintosh Braun‘s breakout single, “The City Below,” can be described as a cathartic indie-synth symphony. It moves with a mesmerizing ease, beholden by the group’s almost distilled vocal qualities, as if their peering from behind heaven’s gates with whispers of prophecy (“We have no fear in the moment…”). The song, featured on the Oregon-based electro-pop duo’s latest four song set, sounds like a MGMT getaway. As the song fades, it sneaks into a thunderous reprise (“Never Give In”), minus the excellent songwriting fanfare. Despite its feel good melody, the chorus lacks significant energy. Thankfully the set features “In Reverse” and “Outline,” which both rely on sneaky Duran Duran-esque ’80s throwback riffs. One can only imagine what their next full length will sound like. It’s obvious that they have found their niche and are better equipped on their musical journey.
