Jazz and house come together for one swinging house party

Heads up, house heads! After breaking through to the masses with the Sam Smith-powered “Latch” for 2013’s Settle, Disclosure is returning to the singles regimen with “Holding On.” And it’s a force to be reckoned with. Pounding bass and a clarion call from guest vocalist Gregory Porter covers the prelude, then an intoxicating house beat fired up with breakbeat ticks starts spinning. Porter, who co-pens the track with Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence and Jimmy Napes, steps outside his inspirational jazz world to drop his version of love and truth on something so rollicking, Crystal Waters might need to do a double take. The vamp even has him spitting out “shake it/sh-shake it” as if he’s inherited a beat box anointing. It’s his finest hour in the crossover. Let’s hope he latches to the same type of mass appeal that Sam Smith experienced.
