Special Report: The Worst Homophobic Churches in America
Providence Road Baptist Church
Newton, North Carolina
Charles Woorley, minister
Okay, combine the disgusting acceptance of slavery, some hidden racism and a Southern Baptist pulpit, and you’re probably going to think of a rabidly anti-gay outburst coming from Pastor Charles Woorley of Providence Road Baptist Church. There’s even proof that the inflamed preacher has been throwing stones at gays since 1978. And back then he recited these words: “Forty years ago [LGBT people] would’ve hung, bless God, from a white oak tree!” In May last year, he told the congregation that he wanted Congress to build a big large fence “and put all the lesbians in there.” He adds: “Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals…and have that fence electrified. And in a few years, they will die out.”
On Sunday, May 27, over 1,000 protesters marched around the Justice Center in Newton two weeks after the “electrified-fence” comment went viral via YouTube. Their messages read: “Preach love not hate” and “Don’t fence me in.”
