Chicago is known for its culture of gospel music. It’s also known for preaching up some gold ole anti-gay rhetoric. Bishop Larry Trotter, who is still recovering from a viral story detailing his unwise decision to post a picture of himself in a bubble bath with his under-age granddaughter while naked on Instagram, has gone on the record to proclaim that he is not “anti-gay” and has not preached homophobic rhetoric. But in 2013, he joined up with an alliance of African-American preachers who oppose same-sex marriage. A press conference was made, showing Trotter in partnership with Bishop Joseph Perry and Bishop Lance Davis, announcing their campaign to stop Senate Bill 10, which focuses on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. According to Trotter, Pastor Meeks is also contributing to the anti-gay crusade by making robo calls. “Well you know, a lot of people were excited about the president announcing he was endorsing same-sex marriage, and we still wanted him to be president,” Trotter told gospel radio personality Angela Martin on Chicago’s 1390. “But now, for those who us who understand the Word, we are not beating up on gays or bashing them. But we feel like same-sex marriage is crossing that final line to make us a wicked people.”
