John Legend
Love in the Future

Release Date: June 25

June 25, the last Tuesday in Black Music Month, is marked with a nice run of albums from R&B/soul acts. Add a returning India.Arie and Stax legends Booker T. Jones and Mavis Staples to the list. But John Legend’s Love in the Future may be the one to resuscitate the sexy swag that originally turned him into a Luther crooner. Since the Roots-collaborated Wake Up!, Legend has been away from the radar, unless you want to factor in his embarrassing stint on ABC’s reality-TV game show Duets. He did redeem himself with the Think Like a Man motion picture soundtrack offering, “Tonight (Best You Ever Had).” But drama surrounding his duet with troubled rap boss Rick Ross seemed to suck all the built up momentum out of the room. Then comes “Made to Love,” the official lead single from Love in the Future, which sounds more like love in the past. There’s a fuzzy, lo-fi sound on the Kanye West-production, and it’s embellished with Motown guitar strokes and drum beats sounding like it’s been abstracted from a Phil Collins love fest. He pleads, “I was sent here for you/We were made to love.” Past or present, Legend remains focused on putting out material that keeps passionate r&b kicking for another day.
