Katy Perry‘s tunes are becoming more and more predictable by the hour. When she tries to dig deeper, more of the same comes out. ‘Roar,” her first single off her forthcoming album Prism, mimics “Firework,” even when it dances with uplifting text. Not sure if she’s still ranting about her ex Russell Brand like she did on “Part of Me.” You almost start to feel as if this is a recurring moment of deja vu (“You held me down, but I got up/Already brushing off the dust,” she sings), but Perry is having just a little more fun this time around, even if it means she’s happy showing off her John Mayer trophy: “I got the eye of the tiger, the fire, dancing through the fire/Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar.” After two listens, the song starts to stick on the brain, particularly the feelgood chorus. Familiarity loosens some of the high expectations of the song, so does some of the cheesy lyrics, but Perry still knows how to design a cute pop song.
