“Maneater”
(1982; #1 pop)
Writer: Daryl Hall, John Oates, Sara Allen
Producer: Daryl Hall, John Oates, Neil Kernon
from the album H2O

Aside from the seductive sax solo and the Motown shuffle, “Maneater” is a subdued New Wave rock number dressed up in James Jamerson’s unforgettable opening bass lines on the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love.” But nostalgia is H&O’s just reward and gels perfectly with the jarring and paranoiac lyricism on the inside: “Oh-oh, here she comes/Watch out boy, she’ll chew you up.”
