Ke$ha: We R Who We R
How can a single skyrocket to #1 on its first week? The breakdown of Ke$ha’s new single explains the concocting key ingredients.
Don’t scratch your heads too hard, it’s pretty simple. Ke$ha’s latest synth-dance jam follows in the same pace of “Tik Tok” and “Your Love Is My Drug,” It’s the latest from the raunchy pop clubhead and the first to premier from her Cannibal EP. But her club worship lyrically is just as silly as it is entertaining (“We’re dancing like we’re dumb-da-da-da-dumb/Our bodies going numb-nu-nu-nu-numb/We’ll be forever young-yu-yu-young/You know we’re superstars/We are who we are”). While the hooks here aren’t as gripping as her former hits, the organization of the song – using Madonna glitz and hip-hop energy atop Dr. Luke’s euphoric clubland sounds – helps boosts Ke$ha’s credibility. Even on “We R Who We R,” some people will still grumble over her in-and-out sing-and-rap style and dependence on Autotune and vocoders, but Ke$ha is staying dear to her young fun and adventurous style. Lucikly, less of those gimmicks are used here – which probably explains why the song soared so quickly to No. 1 on the Hot 100. Another super bonus to gloat about: play P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass” and Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R” back-to-back and you’ve got an intoxicating party mix.
