“Possession Obsession”
(1984, #30 pop)
Writer: Daryl Hall, John Oates, Sara Allen
Producer: Daryl Hall, John Oates, Bob Clearmountain
from the album Big Bam Boom

“Possession Obsession” continues in the trajectory of the sonic reboot exhibited on Big Bam Boom’s stronger single, “Out of Touch.” It’s a lighter number, but it holds up very well. Lyrically the song explains why jealousy and out-of-control possessiveness brings about one’s self-destruction. It also features a very assured Oates on the lead vocals, a rarity in the Hall & Oates lexicon.
