With a gentle piano and an almost operatic Hall singing, “Waterwheel” easily plants the singer-songwriter vibes into Hall & Oates’s soft rock-aimed debut LP, Whole Oats. Of course the pair would jump into harder rock and bigger R&B experiments before and after leaving Atlantic, but the soft images of reflection found here (“My thoughts are drifting to a quieter time”) easily turns this into one of Hall & Oates’ best lullabies.
