Although Paul Young peppier and highly successful version may be instilled deeply in the history books of the Big Eighties, Hall & Oates delivered a more passionate version of “Everytime You Go Away.” With the simple organ/drum drama of Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” in his corner, Hall sweats uncontrollably when he belts out the big verses (“Always the same theme/But can’t you see we’ve got everything going on and on and on”) and shows off a myriad of aches and pains in his ad-libs on the closing minutes. As to why this was never released as a single defies all understanding. It deserved to be heard. In the hands of Paul Young’s ’85 recreation, the world was luckily to get its chance.
