With a touch of old school analog synthesizers (a la Chi-Lites’ “Oh Girl”) and Steely Dan soul, the Arif Mardin-produced “When the Morning Comes” shines as their finest moment in the Seventies folk tradition. Those humble beginnings may seem so primitive and faraway from “Maneater” and “I Can’t Go for That,” but it’s a brilliantly composed selection, something Jim Croce would have easily hammered into his sets if he had been given the chance.
