If the soulful dynamic duo wanted to seriously rock and roll, they could have easily done so. “United State,” one of the very few demonstrations of that, blends the forces of The Knack, Blondie and The Police together for a rollicking power pop ‘n rock throwdown. It’s the most they’ve ever gotten to sounding like a definite garage band. But there’s faking the funk; Hall & Oates are soul brothers dressed in vanilla. They could have stayed on the path of rock, but they would have never stay on it for long.
