DJ pulls a smooth one using starpower, AC/dance-pop hybrid

David Guetta’s synth pop definitely giving the French deejay an advantage in today’s music. He’s produced the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Rowland, Kelis and Flo Rida, and remains one of the most sought-out producers of the avant-garde dance circuit. No surprise that his latest album, his fifth (Nothing But the Beat), also attracts some of biggest pop stars. Usher leads the way on “Without You;” a song that flows like Usher’s warm pop ballads. He serenades the tune using R&B seduction on the verses’ pleas (“I am lost/I am vain/I will never be the same without you”). With each and every passing lyrics, the sadness gets louder (“I can’t look, I’m so blind/Lost my heart, I lost my mind without you”). You start to feel so sorry for Usher after taking on such a gloomy MOR tune, until the catchy upbeat sing-a-long chorus enters the picture with Usher chanting “without you” atop a feel-good rock/pop melody. Now if we can only make out if this song is supposed to be therapeutic for the gigantic void left from a ruined relationship. No better way to move on from a love lost then to take the scorn to the bloody dance floor.
