Mendes hits us with familiar delectable pop on unexpected non-album single
Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes recently dropped a new single, one that he intended to give to Dua Lipa, and it’s relatively safe. Right up the alley of “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” edible pop to nibble on whilst peppered with a throwback Motown dub on the chorus. “If I Can’t Have You” – not to be confused with Yvonne Elliman’s 1977 disco masterpiece – is a decent presentation, but nothing heavy or as sensational than his bolder, more interesting rock-edged stuff (“In My Blood”) and grown folks’ pop (“Nervous,” “Youth”). But hey, for a wanted bachelor that’s practically still desirable to hear on today’s Hot 100 and without a new album to show off, anything tasty at this moment is considered a plus for him.
