The light from neo-jazz R&B singer’s new single seems bright, but it’s definitely built on sweet revenge.

The new single from Chrisette Michele’s forthcoming third project Let Freedom Reign, produced by Chuck Harmony (Fantasia, Ne-Yo), paces with Mary J. Blige-Toni Braxton sweetness as she uses the leftovers of “Epiphany (I’m Leaving)” to tell an old flame that she’s blowing up: “Tell ’em baby I’m a star tonight/I’m up in the sky tonight/For the world to see/I ain’t thinking ’bout you/Baby I’mma do me.” It’s the old cathartic way of dealing with rejection; that is, to toss newfound success in their face. Michele is a talented vocalist with the blessing of Ella on her pipes. This time around, Michele trades in her trademark for a poppier R&B tune. The trade-in wouldn’t be so bad if the lyrics weren’t so self-indulgent.
