El DeBarge pauses his tour plans; enters into rehab to address years of substance abuse

With a major comeback album released in 2010 (Second Chance) and endless promo stops to promote the new album, El DeBarge – best known for his ’80’s hits with family singing group DeBarge –  is putting his foot on the career’s brakes after voluntarily checking into a rehabilitation center.

A press statement released from DeBarge addressed any concerns from his supporters:

“I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone. I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time.”

The 49-year old R&B singer was scheduled to accompany Kem andLedisi on his “Intimacy” tour this spring, but has postponed all performances and has since been replaced by Musiq Soulchild.

DeBarge’s most recent public performance included a stint on BET’s annual “Celebration of Gospel” which aired in January and was hosted by comedian and author Steve Harvey.
