Eric Benet: Sometimes I Cry
Return to smooth silky soul and transparent emotions for R&B crooner run abundantly in new single
Utilizing the power of the male falsetto, R&B singer Eric Benet returns with his strongest single since 2005’s “I Wanna Be Loved.” It’s like the fraternal twin to D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” It’s not a copy, but the swelling build-up towards the end and how Benet approaches the falsetto matches D’Angelo’s performance to a tee. Only critical drawback: the keyboard horns should’ve been replaced with real ones. But the flaw isn’t wide enough to damper the mood. Benet has created a song that could very well become a modern soul classic.
He also wears his emotions on his sleeve, tears and all, in the concept video. Wonder if that Oscar-winning ex was the inspiration behind this.
