Enrique Iglesias: Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)
Four-on-the-floor beats are easily becoming Iglesias’ secret weapon
Enrique Iglesias is no real stranger to clubland fever, but the Spanish star is turning up the heat and beefing up the pop sizzle on his more recent radio hits. “I Like It,” his major hit of 2010, was a surprise, out-of-the-box watershed launching Iglesias into the realm of carnivorous dance-pop. Now the heat has been turned up to broil on “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You).” Like Cee Lo’s “F*** You” safe version, “Lovin’ You” is a mild radio version that keep Iglesias somewhere in the PG-13 camp. Although he opens the cut using a kinder gentleman approach (“Please excuse me, I don’t want to be rude”), he quickly puts his playboy charm into overdrive and uses a cocky “in-your-face” attack boasting his Don Juan credentials. Of course Autotune touch-ups are present, but there’s much on this single to give Iglesias credit for. While “I Like It” seemed like a safe club hit decorated with a predictably sing-a-long chorus, the tribal beats and techno-disco grooves of “Lovin’ You” are far more entrancing. Not only does the juxtaposition of his seducer and aggressor personalities add even more interesting layers to Iglesias’ profile, but DJ Frank E’s zipping keyboard production and the cameo appearance of Ludacris helps organize the perfect environment of chill. Too bad the dirty version posseses the better hook.
