Jazmine Sullivan: 10 Seconds
Newborn R&B diva known for “busting windows” is back…and this time, she’s counting down to ten.
Using the pain from 2009’s scorner “Bust Your Windows,” Jazmine Sullivan once again kicks off another single using outrage and pent-up anger. Producer Salaam Remi, the go-to guy for the throwback soul, designs a song that glows with the gusto of Stax and with the punch of Rose Royce’s “I’m Going Down.” Sullivan’s voice strains as it pours out bitter emotionsĀ over a relationship gone wrong and ultimately leading to her countdown of an ultimatum (“You know that I can get crazy/When I go off ain’t nobody to tame me/I’m throwing and breaking shit cussing and looking/For something to hit you/And you got 10 seconds to go”). Like Phylis Hyman on a lonely song, she does these breakup songs so easily. Sadly, Sullivan is being carvedĀ out as the angry black woman with a Tyler Perry spirit against black men. Right now R Kelly may be swooning ladies over his “When A Woman Loves” anthem, but Sullivan is back to remind the fellas that one wrong move and your ass is out.
