The mystery behind Aretha’s ailment is cancer, according to family friend

R&B/soul singer Aretha Franklin is battling pancreatic cancer, according to a close friend of the family.

ABC affiliate WXYZ Action News in Detroit, Mich. reported today that a family friend of Franklin’s is suffering from the disease. A family friend also told WJBK FOX 2 News in Detroit that Franklin is doing “okay,” though her family and friends are “very concerned” and have asked fans of the Queen of Soul to send prayers and well wishes.

Last month Ms. Franklin announced an abrupt cancellations of all remainder concert dates and appearances until Spring 2010 due to an undisclosed illness, under her doctors’ orders. Franklin had to undergo a mysterious surgery last week, but it has been reported that surgery was a success.

Citizens of Detroit, Mich. held a prayer vigil for Franklin’s recovery on the day of her surgery. Franklin’s publicist released a statement to the Associated Press, stating: “God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country.” But Franklin, nor her publicist released any details about her ailment or the surgery.

Status tributes to the 68-year old R&B singer began to circulate across social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter, with words of encouragement and support.
