Crank up the Star Power! It’s time for you to vote for the best rock songs in Guitar Hero
(Updated: August 5, 2011)
Guitar Hero, the popular rhythm gaming franchise, may be doomed, but it still speaks to us beyond the grave. For five golden years, millions of gamers and rock fans entertained the Activision franchise. With stronger competition from the Harmonix/MTV ‘Rock Band’ franchise trying to eat into their profits, Guitar Hero continued to dominate, becoming a cultural institution like Super Mario Bros. was in the Eighties. Activision Publishing chief executive Mike Griffith, in response to questions about Activision’s approach to the Guitar Hero market, stated that Guitar Hero continues to outsell the Rock Band series in both number of sales and revenue, with consumers continuing to buy the separate games on the market, and considered the market acceptance of the multiple games as validation for their model. But its success could not hault the inevitable.
Even after the last entry into the Guitar Hero world landed in retail (Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, 2010), millions continue to tune up their plastic guitars and drum kits to the sounds of Rock Band and other DLC content.
After Activision made the announcement to hault future plans for the franchise due to oversaturation and sour economical fourth-quarter reports, a period of grief was exhibited by concerned ‘Guitar Hero’ fans, even from superstars in the rock world. Despite the game’s early criticisms from anti-gamers and rock stars seeking for fans to play “real” music, Guitar Hero was successful at introducing rock classics and legends to younger generations while also opening the door of exposure for new generational rock bands and indies.
