Marvin Sease, known for his racy style of the blues, dies at the age of 64

Cult soul singer Marvin Sease has died at the age of 64. He passed away on February 8 in Vicksburg, Mississippi after a bout with pneumonia.

After breaking into the music scene singing gospel as a teenager in the 1960’s, the South Carolina-born artist sang with his brothers before embarking on a solo career.

In 1986 he released his self-titled debut and became comfortable in recording risqué sexualized tunes.

Although vocally compared to Johnnie Taylor and Tyrone Davis, Sease is most known for recording “Candy Licker” in 1987. The song, a ten-minute rhythm & blues song that catered on the lines of Millie Jackson, featured a rap detailing Sease’s alter-ego “Jody” while using multiple racy double entendres. Without any serious airplay and after being banned from the Southern states for its raunchy lyrics (“I will lick you to you cum”), the song became an underground sensation and helped established his career as a Southern lounge singer, oftentimes called the chitlin’ circuit. Fellow blues singers Denise LaSalle, Bobby Rush, Mel Waiters, Ponanny and Theodis Ealey usually accompanied Sease in co-headlining concerts and tours.

Sease‘s last album was 2008’s ‘Who’s Got The Power’.
