Monster Mashup: Bruno Mars on “California Gurls”

While in London, Mars shows some out-of-this-world love to the girls in California

It’s hard to not really get enraptured in the sweet candy-coated melodics of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.” That’s why it was a major hit in 2010. Here’s an even bigger update: Best-selling single of 2010.  So, why not have a superstar hitmaker like Bruno Mars (“Grenade,” “Just the Way You Are,” “Nothin’ On You,” “Forget You”) add his ten cents and change to Perry’s cutesy single.

While currently on tour in the UK, Mars entered the BBC Studios for a live interview and impromptu studio performance. Certainly he had enough hits of his own to cover, but decides to switch things up and offer a silky smooth take on “Gurls.” Towards the end, Mars and his band kicks things into high gear – even pulling out some Eddie Levert-esque gospel belting. What a mashup.
