Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears: I Feel for You (Mickey Mouse Club)
Vault flashback: JT and Britney turn out a Chaka Khan classic
Hearing about the recent passing of original Mousketeer legend Annette Funicello caused me to reflect on just how much times have changed. Back when it was first initiated, during my mom’s youth, the Mickey Mouse Club was for teenagers. When I was a teenager, MMC was all about the kids. Its alumni includes a strong list of shooting stars: actor Ryan Goslin, JC Chasez (of N*SYNC) and Christina Aguilera. Of course, the hip club is best known for being the launch pad for Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
From 1993 to 1996, Timberlake and Spears entertained their peers with their typical upbeat song and dance. The formula is evidenced best on this 1993 duet performance of “I Feel for You.” On the popular Prince/Chaka Khan track, the two strutted across the stage in their outdated ’90’s Oshkosh kiddy gear and New Kids on the Block influenced dance steps. The quasi-soul pipes were there and there was plenty evidence of a long-term career in show business. Not sure if Britney and JT likes to rewind the hands of time during their days off, but it’s pretty neat to see the early stages of the “Toxic” and “Suit & Tie” singers, especially when a duet merging these two stars seemed so possible.
