Kelz undergoes emergency throat surgery in Chicago

Grammy-Award winning R&B singer R. Kelly underwent emergency throat surgery and will be unable to perform for an indefinite period, according to his spokesman on Wednesday.

The self-proclaimed Pied Piper of R&B, whose real name is Robert Kelly, was in severe pain and was rushed to a Northwestern Medical Hospital on Tuesday where an abscess on one of his tonsils was drained, according to a statement from spokesman Allan Mayer.

A week ago, Kelly posted on his Twitter account that he did not want to take any more medicine. ““I refuse to take another cup of theraflu!,” the singer stated. “I feel like my throat is coming back. I’ve been in bed sweating like crazy. Thanks guys.”

Kelly just completed the U.S. leg of his “Love Letter” tour, but it was not known when he will be able to return to the stage to resume his performing, according to the official’s press statement.

After undergoing emergency throat surgery, Kelly, 44, was discharged from Northwestern Memorial Chicago hospital late Wednesday night – one day after his surgery.

“He left the hospital last night and is recuperating at home in Chicago,” his publicist told E! News Thursday. “Still no word on when he’ll be able to resume performing.”
