First-ever all-star tribute album celebrates the rich legacy of Buddy Holly

It’s a mystery why hasn’t one music empire ever flexed their powers to craft together an all-star project honoring the rich legacy of Buddy Holly. The rock ‘n roll legend with the rockabilly style, who died tragically in 1959 during a plane crash while his career started to explode, recorded only three albums in his lifetime, but dozens of compilations featuring unreleased mateiral, mixes and alternate takes proliferate his ever-expanding catalog. He’s been the subject of documentaries, bio-pics (The Buddy Holly Story), best-selling books and moving tributes like Don McLean’s “American Pie” and “Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” but hasn’t been giving a sweet all-star tribute on compact disc (and vinyl). Until now.

Rave On Buddy Holly, assembled by Starbucks’ Hear Music label and Fantasy Records, brings together a Who’s Who of pop music and a superb list of critically-acclaimed indie-rock bands and Grammy nominees to  pay their respects to the legend of Holly. The Black Keys opens the set with “Dearest” and the 19-track collection begins its ascent to the heavens. Indie-rock duo She & Him contribute their cover of “Oh Boy,” while My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Lou Reed, Sir Paul McCartney, The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas, Kid Rock and Florence + the Machine all each find a tune to contribute their talent to.

In a very special edition of JUKEBOX, HiFi has personally selected seven tracks from Rave On Buddy Holly for a very special playlist honoring the 2011 compilation. And when you’re through, visit one of these lovely online retailers and pick up your personal copy today. By the way, a double-LP (vinyl) version is also available at participating retail and online stores.
