With Sting and the Police strongly impacting rock radio, Hall & Oates seemed inspired to emulate their sound on the 1979 non-single “Number One.” Even if the song falls into the category of desperate clone, it’s a wondrous display of guitar reggae and Jerry Marotta’s stellar drum work. It’s also the perfect illustration that they could hammer a groove that wasn’t exactly a part of their musical DNA.
