Daryl Hall originally wrote the song with his girlfriend’s ex (longtime co-writer Sara Allen) in mind, but “rich guy” didn’t have a ring to it. Hall later confessed that the nameless guy knows the song was really about him. Along with a cool back story came the cool Rhodes action, a snazzy chorus and Motown-seasoned doo-wop harmonies. All of this propelled the relatively short single (only two minutes, twenty three seconds long) to the number one slot on the Hot 100 during the week of March 26, 1977, becoming the first number one single to come out of their treasure chest.
