Becoming the band’s first pop breakthrough, “Sara Smile,” a romantic nod to Hall’s then-girlfriend, is the perfect showcase of their smooth soul and R&B influences. Due to its success on the charts, Atlantic Records responded to the RCA single by re-releasing “She’s Gone,” which escalated all the way to number seven pop, an improvement over its number 60 entry in 1974.
