1983’s “Jingle Bell Rock” may be their greatest claim to fame in the holiday songbook, but their touching Hallmark-chiseled original “Home for Christmas” is far more superior. Decorated with soulful gospel organ, acoustic guitar warmth and some of Hall’s finest crooning, the song deals with the agonizing ritual of the non-stop touring life and the special blessing of finding a way back home just for Christmas: “We’re living apart/We’re so close, we’re so far…it might be just for a day/But I’ll still come home for Christmas.” Think of it as an upgrade to the Eagles’ “Please Come Home for Christmas.”
