When the pair briefly walked away from all the H&O hoopla, longtime manager Tommy Motolla had moved on to handle CBS and the style of music in commercial pop was dramatically changing. The idea for Hall to step out to deliver a second solo record was in motion as the duo walked away from their relationship with RCA. One of the grandeur tracks from Hall’s Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine LP happened to be “Someone Like You.” Pop-rock guitars swell and Quiet Storm ooze filters through the seams. Then Robbie McIntosh’s dramatic guitar solo grabs your attention. It’s not as polished as Hall & Oates career highlights, but it’s a fair demonstration of Hall’s powers during the darkest of times.
