“It’s so stupid that I got to laugh,” Daryl Hall belts while surrounded by a harvest of background vocals that sounds like it’s been culled from Beach Boys harmonies. Besides that lyric, there’s hardly anything stupid about the 1978 single. It allowed them to collaborate with producer David Foster, breaking away from their longtime producer Christopher Bond. This union allowed them to forge a fresh pop-driven sound, one that would dominate the remainder of their course with RCA. “It’s a Laugh” became the only single on the Along the Red Ledge album to reach the Top 20 on the pop charts.
