At national Christmas tree lighting ceremony, Mariah Carey sounds like she needs more than “you” for Christmas. Pass her the Ricola and hot tea.

Give her some mercy. It’s cold outside and she’s not lip-synching (here).

Still, Mariah Carey, ultimate pop singer and probably the only singer to ever take the reins from the late Whitney Houston, stumbled all over her revered holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” while performing at the National Christmas Tree lighting last week.

You can sense from the beginning of the track that she’s a bit breathy, grasping to get a breather in between notes. Halfway into the performance, things go horribly wrong. She cracks and croaks endlessly, trying over and over again to sing the song in her darling diva style.

Honestly, this has got to be the worst we have ever heard her sing. And that’s saying a lot, since she normally opt to lip-synch for these kinds of live performances.

Here’s a point while moving forward, Mariah. If you know you’re having a bad day, try not to do those vocal aerobics and note slides. They will expose the worst in a bad throat.

But let’s not leave the conversation without first celebrating how radiant she looked in that white dress.
