Rod Stewart
Merry Christmas, Baby

Even with all of those songbooks, it’s quite a surprise to discover that Merry Christmas, Baby is Stewart’s first holiday disc. Now acting as a new-age crooner, Stewart’s singing style – now grittier with age and a bit more mellower – manages to work well against the soulful pipes of Mary J. Blige on “We Three Kings” and a bit better with Cee Lo Green on the upbeat title track. More duets surface, including a reimagined duet with Ella Fitzgerald on “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and lots more fireplace jazz slots (Dave Koz, Michael Buble’). Thankfully the sultry string arrangements are substantial enough to help add that extra egg nog froth to Stewart’s scratchy faux-soul vocals.

Release Date: 30 October 2o12
Label: Verve
